Exploring Coiba National Park by private yacht? Lago Bay Airstrip offers a convenient connection between Panama's central Pacific coast and Panama City, with private charter flights and coastal passenger pickups at Hicaco, Santa Catalina, and Playa Banco.

For yacht owners, captains, and charter operators exploring Panama's Pacific coast, Coiba National Park is an extraordinary destination. But what happens when an owner, guest, or crew member needs to return to Panama City?

Traditionally, this can mean interrupting an itinerary, arranging a lengthy road transfer, or committing the entire yacht to a return voyage.

There is another option.

Located near Santa Catalina and Coiba National Park, Lago Bay Airstrip (MPLY) provides private charter connections to Albrook Domestic Airport (PAC) in Panama City. The flight takes approximately 45 minutes.

We also coordinate ground transportation from several coastal pickup locations, allowing yacht captains and logistical coordinators to choose the most suitable landing point for their vessel and tender.

Whether your yacht is anchored near Coiba, exploring the Santa Catalina coastline, or cruising the Gulf of Montijo, Lago Bay offers a practical way to connect your passengers with Panama City.

Why Explore Coiba by Yacht?

Coiba National Park is one of the most remarkable marine destinations in the Eastern Pacific. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the protected area encompasses Coiba Island, numerous smaller islands, and an extensive surrounding marine environment.

Its exceptional marine biodiversity, tropical islands, clear waters, coral reefs, and outstanding diving make it an attractive destination for private yachts exploring Panama.

For vessels cruising between Costa Rica and Panama, Coiba offers an excellent reason to spend additional time in this part of the Pacific.

But yacht itineraries don't always follow a fixed schedule.

An owner may want to return to the city, guests may have international flights, or crew members may need to rotate while the yacht continues its journey.

Rather than moving the entire vessel, passengers can come ashore and connect with a private charter flight from Lago Bay.

The same arrangement works in reverse for owners, guests, and crew arriving in Panama City who want to join a yacht already exploring Coiba.

Three Coastal Pickup Locations

One of the advantages of Lago Bay is that we aren't limited to a single marina or dock.

Depending on your vessel, tender, draft, and prevailing coastal conditions, we can coordinate passenger transfers from three different locations.

1. Hicaco – The Closest Beach Option

Distance from Lago Bay Airstrip: Approximately 4 km

Hicaco is a quiet coastal village with a beautiful, relatively untouched beach. It is an attractive option for smaller tenders and vessels able to bring passengers ashore directly.

Unlike the busier tourism areas, Hicaco offers a more secluded beach environment. Its generally favorable beach access makes it a useful alternative for yacht transfers across a range of tidal conditions.

For vessels with suitable tenders and favorable landing conditions, passengers can come ashore and meet our ground transportation for the short drive to Lago Bay.

Hicaco is our closest coastal pickup option.

2. Santa Catalina – The Established Coastal Hub

Distance from Lago Bay Airstrip: Approximately 11 km

Santa Catalina is the best-known coastal community in the region, internationally recognized for its surfing, diving, and access to Coiba National Park.

It is also a familiar location for visiting yachts and their crews.

For vessels able to bring passengers ashore by tender, Santa Catalina offers an established coastal access point with local services and maritime activity.

From Santa Catalina, the drive to Lago Bay Airstrip is approximately 10–15 minutes.

This is an especially convenient option for yachts already visiting the area or coordinating with local marine operators.

3. Playa Banco – Dock and Boat Ramp Access

Distance from Lago Bay Airstrip: Approximately 22 km

Not every yacht can use a beach landing.

Larger tenders, deeper-draft launches, or vessels requiring a more substantial landing facility may need a dock.

Playa Banco offers a functional dock and boat ramp, making it an important alternative for more demanding transfers.

We recently completed a passenger pickup here for a large visiting yacht. Its tender was approximately 40 feet long, with a draft of around 2.5 feet, and required dock access.

Playa Banco proved suitable for the operation.

Our vehicle collected the passengers at the dock, and approximately 25 minutes later they were at Lago Bay Airstrip, ready to board their charter flight to Panama City.

The flight to Albrook took another 45 minutes.

From dockside pickup to Panama City airport in approximately 70 minutes.

It was a straightforward connection between a large yacht operating in the region and Panama City's domestic airport.

This is an excellent example of why having multiple coastal pickup options matters.

Our objective is to coordinate the most practical connection between your vessel and the airstrip.

What Are the Alternatives?

Yacht passengers exploring Coiba have several possible ways to return to Panama City, but each involves logistical considerations.

Returning by Road

Passengers can come ashore near Santa Catalina and arrange private ground transportation to Panama City.

The road distance is approximately 362 km. At an illustrative average speed of 60 km/h, that represents just over six hours of driving, before allowing for stops, traffic, or other delays.

For yacht owners and guests with limited time, this can be a considerable commitment.

Traveling Through Santiago

Another possibility is to travel approximately two hours by road from Santa Catalina to Rubén Cantú Airport in Santiago.

Private charter flights may be arranged from there, subject to aircraft availability and operating arrangements.

While Santiago has a paved runway and is a legitimate regional aviation alternative, it requires a substantially longer ground transfer than Lago Bay.

Traveling Through Boca Chica and David

For yachts already exploring the Gulf of Chiriquí, Boca Chica can be a useful coastal connection.

Passengers can come ashore at Boca Chica, arrange ground transportation to David Airport, and connect with scheduled or privately arranged flights to Panama City.

However, for a yacht operating around Coiba or Santa Catalina, traveling west toward Boca Chica can involve approximately three to four hours by boat, followed by additional road transportation to David.

This option may make sense for vessels already operating in the Chiriquí region, but it is a less convenient alternative for many yachts exploring Coiba.

The Coiba Island Airstrip

Coiba Island has an existing airstrip associated with Panama's National Aeronaval Service (SENAN).

However, access is highly restricted. Private charter operators familiar with the area report that requests require lengthy advance coordination and are frequently denied.

It should not be considered a dependable option for ordinary yacht passenger transfers.

Returning by Yacht

Of course, a yacht can simply continue its voyage to Panama City or Costa Rica.

This may be convenient when the vessel is already scheduled to return, but it can be an unnecessary interruption when only one or two passengers need to leave.

Lago Bay offers an alternative: move the passengers rather than the yacht.

How the Lago Bay Transfer Works

The process is relatively straightforward.

For passengers departing from their yacht:

  1. The yacht captain or shore-side coordinator contacts Lago Bay with the proposed transfer date, passenger numbers, and vessel location.

  2. We discuss the most suitable coastal pickup point.

  3. The yacht's tender brings passengers ashore at the agreed location.

  4. Our ground transportation meets the passengers and transfers them to Lago Bay Airstrip.

  5. Passengers board their prearranged private charter flight to Albrook Domestic Airport in Panama City.

The flight takes approximately 45 minutes.

For passengers joining a yacht:

The process works in reverse.

Guests or crew fly from Albrook to Lago Bay, where ground transportation takes them to the agreed coastal pickup location. From there, the yacht's tender brings them aboard.

This provides an alternative to having the yacht make a lengthy detour to collect arriving passengers.

A Useful Alternative for Yacht Owners and Captains

There are several situations where this arrangement can make a considerable difference:

  • Owner departures: An owner can return to Panama City while the yacht continues its itinerary.

  • Guest transfers: Guests can return to Panama City without requiring the yacht to make the journey.

  • Crew changes: Crew members can join or leave the vessel while minimizing disruption to the yacht's schedule.

  • Charter itineraries: Yacht charter operators can offer guests greater flexibility when planning their arrival and departure.

  • Logistical support: Yacht managers, captains, and expedition coordinators have another option for moving people between remote coastal locations and Panama City.

For vessels traveling between Costa Rica and Panama, this can be particularly useful. There is no need to make the return voyage simply because one or two people need to get back to the city.

Connect your Yacht

Lago Bay Airstrip is privately owned and commercially certified, providing a dedicated regional air access point for the central Pacific coast.

Our location offers something particularly useful for visiting yachts: a combination of private aviation and flexible coastal ground transportation.

We understand that every vessel and every transfer is different.

Some passengers can come ashore on a beach. Others require dock access. Sometimes the most convenient location is not the closest one, but the one that works best for the tender and prevailing coastal conditions.

We are interested in working directly with yacht owners, captains, yacht-management companies, charter operators, and maritime logistics professionals to coordinate these connections.

Whether you need to arrange a single passenger departure, a larger group transfer, or a recurring logistical arrangement, we would be happy to discuss the possibilities.

Exploring Coiba doesn't mean you have to sail all the way back to Panama City.
