The Worst Part About Coiba Island (And How to Skip It)

If you have ever looked into diving, surfing, or eco-tourism in Panama, you have undoubtedly heard of Coiba National Park. Often referred to as the "Galapagos of Central America," Coiba is a UNESCO World Heritage site that boasts some of the most spectacular marine biodiversity on the planet. We are talking about schooling hammerhead sharks, giant manta rays, migrating humpback whales, and pristine, untouched jungle environments that look exactly like Jurassic Park.

It is, without a question, a bucket-list destination.

But if you talk to anyone who has actually made the trek out to the Veraguas coast to see it, they will all tell you the exact same thing after they finish raving about the whale sharks. Their eyes will roll back, they will sigh, and they will warn you about the one massive, exhausting downside to the best diving that Panama has to offer.

The worst part about Coiba Island isn't the rustic nature, the bugs, or the lack of cell service on the water.

The worst part about Coiba Island is simply getting there.

The 7-Hour Reality Check

To understand the logistical nightmare of a traditional trip to Coiba, you have to look at the map of Panama. Most international travelers land at Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City. From there, the standard route to Coiba involves getting to the small coastal jumping-off town of Santa Catalina.

On paper, Google Maps might tell you it is a five-hour drive. In reality? It is a grueling, white-knuckle, 6 to 8-hour journey that tests the patience of even the most seasoned travelers.

The City Traffic: First, you have to navigate the notorious traffic cutting out of Panama City.

The Highway Grind: Then, you spend hours on the Inter-American Highway, dodging aggressive freight trucks and navigating through the city of Santiago.

The Final Stretch: Finally, you turn off toward Soná and head down the final road to Santa Catalina—a winding, remote stretch infamous for sudden potholes, wandering livestock, and unpredictable rainy-season washouts.

By the time you roll into town, park your rental car, and check into a noisy surf hostel or eco-lodge, you have sacrificed an entire day of your vacation just dealing with asphalt, stress, and physical exhaustion. If you are planning a four-day weekend, half of your trip is instantly swallowed by the road.

And remember: you still have to do the exact same drive in reverse to get home.

The Good News? We Just Erased the Logistics

At Lago Bay, we looked at this beautiful coast, looked at the potholes on the road from Santiago, and decided that high-value travelers, serious divers, and families deserved a better experience. Vacation time is finite. You shouldn't have to trade a full day of your life and a massive amount of physical energy just to access the ocean.

So, we built a shortcut: The Lago Bay Airstrip.

By introducing private fly-in access directly to our property, we completely eliminated the worst part of visiting Coiba Island. Instead of waking up at dawn to fight city traffic, you board a comfortable charter flight at Albrook Airport (PAC) in Panama City.

You lift off, soar over the stunning Pearl Islands, fly across the glittering Gulf of Montijo, and 45 minutes later, your plane touches down smoothly on the green tarmac at Lago Bay. No traffic. No potholes. No wasted days.

Maximizing Your Time for your vacation at Coiba!

When you eliminate the grueling transit day, the entire economics of your vacation changes.

Take your time in Panama City for a good breakfast and a last look around at the incredibly modern skyline. Your charter flight schedule is tailored to your itenerary. Fly into Lago Bay and check in to your hotel or vacation home an hour after take off.

You can easily spend the afternoon surfing the local breaks, exploring our lush nature trails, or prepping your gear for the water for the next morning.

When your Coiba excursion begins, you aren't waking up sore from a day in a rental car. You are fully rested, energized, and ready for a world-class day of diving at Hannibal Bank or hiking the trails of the park's main island.

Because Lago Bay sits just minutes outside the main bustle of Santa Catalina, you get the absolute best of both worlds. You enjoy seamless access to the area’s top dive and surf boat captains, but when the day is done, you retreat to a peaceful, private, solar-supported sanctuary surrounded by nature—completely detached from the noise of the town's hostel strips.

Skip the Road. Choose the Skies.

Coiba National Park is a place of magic, wonder, and untamed beauty. It is an experience that stays with you for the rest of your life. But you don't need to earn that experience through hours of highway exhaustion.

Let the uninformed tourists tackle the 7-hour drive. Your time is worth more than that.

Charter a private plane for your family to the Lago Bay Airstrip and get directly into the good part. Dive into the Pacific waters of Coiba National Park.
